TAKEIYA ORIGINAL (By: Takeiya Perry)
At the age of 9, I was enrolled in a sewing course at a local school in Boston. My parents realized how passionate I was about sewing, and purchased a machine for me. It was from that point on that I never stopped sewing. I remember turning down play-dates with friends just to sew. I knew that I was different because my idea of fun was asking my parents to bring me to the fabric store. I would learn techniques from my parents friends that had a knowledge of sewing.
In college I majored in Art and Graphic Design, because the college did not have a Fashion Design Major. Sewing became a hobby, that I wanted to do so much more with. I am inspired by costume designers from the silver screen, couture designs found at Red Carpet events, Project Runway, and Theater.
6 - WHAT HAS HELPED PROMOTE YOUR CAREER IN FASHION?
In 2014 I had the honor of meeting Fashion designer Sondra Celli, at a store event at Fabric Basement. She shared some of her designs, and how she became a fashion designer. I was able to meet her after the conference and she gave me some pointers on how to become a fashion designer.
During Boston Fashion Week 2014, I had the pleasure of seeing clothing designed by Kinda Tuma during Boston Fashion Week. I also had the chance to see four designers showcase their designs at Liberty Hotel's Fashionably Late.
Seeing these collections in 2014 promoted my dreams to become a career in Fashion Design.
