RIMMA ZAIKA DESIGNS

(formerly Wearable Art by Rimma)

When I was a little girl I was drawn to fashion and designing and constantly was doing that from the age of 7.. After I closed my boutique in Copley to start a family I was so busy with a family life, that I never imagined to start designing again, but my curious daughter was looking around our house and found a gold yarn and, being addicted to anything that shines, she came to me and asked to make something for her. In my sleep a design came in my dream and then I knew I wanted to jump back into the fashion world.

6 - WHAT HAS HELPED PROMOTE YOUR CAREER IN FASHION?

After a long hiatus due to family circumstances I continued with my business in 2012, I had help from an amazing team of 3 friends - a model, photographer, and a hair/makeup artist/stylist, we had a show and photoshoots that jumpstarted my career again. Thanks to Facebook the word got out about me and then I had more shows where I worked with more people, and now I have a considerable fan base..

5 - WHICH DESIGNER WOULD YOU LIKE THE OPPORTUNITY TO COLLABORATE WITH?

I don't have a specific designer that I would want to collaborate with, as I said my collection is very versatile and it can go with anything, I have collaborated with a few designers and if anyone wants to collaborate with me I would be happy to.
That said... and I realize that that's from the realm of fantasy - Karl Lagerfeld, Georgina Chapman (Marchesa), Domenico Dolce, Stefano Gabbana (Dolce and Gabbana)

4 - WHO INSPIRES YOU THE MOST IN FASHION?

I am inspired by contemporary Coco Chanel: the details and workmanship that goes in each collection. All the colors, materials, textiles, techniques, are very close to what I do, the embroidery, beading, knitting, crocheting, pink, black, white, purple, with pearl beads everywhere.
Another inspiration comes from the nature itself, especially Spring and Fall in New England - colors, shapes, combinations of colors and shapes.

3 - HOW DO YOU BALANCE CREATIVITY WITH COMMERCE?

Both of these aspects are really important, I just have to plan out my time. When I am getting ready for a show I will work on jewelry and clothing exclusively, but in the time between shows I spend on setting up my Etsy shop, posting on Facebook, meeting with customers, doing trunk and trade shows. My daughter and my husband is a great help.

2 - WHAT KIND OF FEEDBACK HAVE YOU BEEN RECEIVING ON YOUR LATEST COLLECTION? HOW HAS THE 2015/2016 SEASON BEEN FOR YOU SO FAR?

I have been receiving really positive feedback, people think my collection is colorful, well made, and truly one of a kind, they like how bright it is and the statement factor. With my collection I want people to stop wearing black, so they don't look like they are going to a funeral, but to be bold and make statements, wearing conspicuous colors, and have fun. People ask me where can I wear that, my answer is simple, wherever you want, a woman should feel good in what she is wearing and not give a care about what is expected of her, BE BOLD. My spring collection is extremely fun, it has bright colors with girly shapes, big poofy skirts with Irish crochet lace tops, or flowy tops that you can pair with jeans, I have a very versatile collection that can go with anything.

1 - WHERE DO YOU SEE THE RIMMA ZAIKA BRAND IN 5 YEARS TIME?

My Goal is to open up a store/ boutique on Newbury street or Cambridge, but I still would want to do shows around the world with bigger venues.
